Where to stay in Cologne: three areas
Where to stay in Cologne is mostly a question of location. The cathedral stands directly beside the main station, so a hotel in the Old Town and station area gives you short walks to the cathedral and to long-distance trains. Deutz on the right bank of the Rhine looks across to the Old Town and the cathedral. The Belgian Quarter is a residential and going-out district with its own character.
This page compares areas, not individual hotels, and it gives no room prices. Check rates and availability for your dates, especially in the Carnival days from 4 to 10 February 2027 and in the Christmas market weeks from 16 November to 23 December 2026. If you want to book a cathedral visit around your stay, read the ticket guide, because an interior visit has cost entry since 1 July 2026.

Old Town and station area: short walks to the cathedral
The base for a first visit.
The cathedral and the main station share one square. A hotel here keeps your first and last day simple: you arrive by train and you are almost at the entrance. It also helps if you plan the tower, which opens at 09:00 from March to October. For daily routes from here, see getting to the cathedral and the things to do in Cologne. The Old Town lies along the Rhine, and the Hohenzollern Bridge starts near the cathedral.
Use the street address of any hotel on a map to judge the walk, because the distance from a given building cannot be read from the district name.
Our pick: an evening on the river
Staying in the old town, the pier below the cathedral is a short walk away.

Cathedral tours, Old Town walks and Rhine cruises that start in the city centre.
Deutz: the view of the cathedral from the right bank
Deutz lies across the Rhine. The Rheinboulevard faces the Old Town, and from the bridge and the promenade you see the cathedral and the Old Town together. The KölnTriangle viewing platform at Ottoplatz 1 stands near the Messe/Deutz station and charges €5 (reduced €4). The Hohenzollern Bridge has a path for pedestrians and cyclists, so you can walk back to the cathedral.
A Deutz hotel works if you value the view and a train stop at Messe/Deutz. It is not a place where you wake up beside the cathedral, so allow time to cross the bridge in the morning.

Areas compared
Location, not hotel quality.
| Area | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Old Town and station area | Short walks to the cathedral, the Old Town and long-distance trains | Hotels differ by street, so check each address on a map |
| Deutz, right bank | The view across the Rhine to the cathedral, the Rheinboulevard and the KölnTriangle platform | You cross the Hohenzollern Bridge to reach the cathedral |
| Belgian Quarter | Cafés, shops and Gründerzeit houses along Brüsseler Straße | Not a guarantee of quiet nights or cheaper rooms |
For most first visits focused on the cathedral, the Old Town and station area is the practical choice. Pick Deutz for the view and the Belgian Quarter for a local atmosphere with cafés.
The Belgian Quarter and the city levy
Two things to know before you book.
The Belgian Quarter
A residential and going-out district with cafés, shops and Gründerzeit houses, with Brüsseler Straße as its main axis. Compare the street and the map for your hotel, because a quarter does not guarantee peace at night.
The cultural promotion levy
Cologne adds a levy of 5 percent of the accommodation basis, including VAT. Services that belong directly to the stay, such as cleaning, count towards it. It does not apply to every restaurant service. On a basis of €100, the levy is €5. Check on your booking whether the levy is shown in the total.
Business stays
Since 1 July 2024 business overnight stays are no longer generally exempt.
