Cologne Cathedral at night: what to expect
After dark the cathedral stands lit above the old town. The exterior lighting was renewed in April 2025. The new system uses about 700 LED lights and an average of around 11 kW, compared with 54 kW before. From 1 a.m. the lighting is strongly dimmed. It does not simply go off, and no single switch-on time applies all year, so do not plan around an exact minute.
The inside of the church is a different matter. The normal sightseeing visit ends well before evening, on Monday to Saturday at 5:45 p.m. with last entry at 5:30 p.m. For a look inside after dark you need the special evening tour, described below. If you want to join other guided visits, see our page on Cologne Cathedral guided tours.

Where to see the cathedral at night
Three places that work well.
The cathedral square
Stand at the west front and look up. Portal and towers are lit, and the square is right beside the main station, so you can combine it with a train arrival or departure.
The Hohenzollern Bridge
The bridge carries trains, pedestrians and bicycles, but not cars. The footpath leads from behind Museum Ludwig across the Rhine to Deutz. Walk it for the cathedral at your back and the lit city ahead. Love padlocks are part of the scene.
Deutz and the Rhine promenade
From the Deutz side of the Rhine you see cathedral, bridge and old town together. The Rheinboulevard faces the old town. At events a free spot for photos is not guaranteed, so allow a few minutes to find one.

A good evening walk
Start at the cathedral, follow the footpath over the bridge and look back from Deutz. Plan the walk back before it gets late and wear shoes you can walk in. For the route in daylight, see things to do in Cologne.

Prayer and services
The church is a place of prayer with services every day. Prayer access is at the north transept on the station side, on weekdays until 8 p.m. Weekend times differ, so check at the entrance. Prayer and services stay free of charge. Sightseeing in the interior has cost money since 1 July 2026. See cathedral tickets and prices.

A night view from above
The KölnTriangle platform in Deutz.
The KölnTriangle viewing platform at Ottoplatz 1 in Deutz looks across the Rhine to the cathedral. Admission is €5, or €4 reduced for pupils, students and groups of five or more. Children up to 12 years are free.
| Period | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| October to April | Daily 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. |
| May to September | Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. |
| 24 December | 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. |
The platform closes in storms and thunderstorms. It is also closed on Weiberfastnacht, Rosenmontag, the Kölner Lichter and New Year's Eve. For most people on a short trip, the bridge walk plus a short stop at the platform covers the views.
